Rejoicing In God: Lessons and Carols for the Christian Year

The School of Church Music strives to encourage the use of church music in the Diocese of Fredericton. Our mandate and vision includes:
  • initiating church music educational events, workshops and schools.
  • maintaining a list of church musicians now serving in our Diocese.
  • help co-ordinate and/or provide music leadership and/or advice for special events within the diocesan context
  • striving to make music resources in the area of church music available to parishes regardless of their style of music.
  • to maintain and oversee the annual Diocesan Choir School.
Historically the School of Church Music and the Diocesan Choir School were one and the same thing. Several years ago the School of Church Music, with the blessing and encouragement of the (then) Board of Programme, began to identify itself as an entity separate from and in addition to the Diocesan Choir School in order to attempt to begin to address some of the larger issues, needs and styles of church musicians throughout the Diocese. Relying on volunteer resources this vision is beginning to experience realization.

The School of Church Music operates at the pleasure of the Bishop of the Diocese of Fredericton. The administration falls under the Chair of the School of Church Music who is appointed directly by the Bishop for terms of three to six years. The Chair, on advice of the members, oversees and appoints new members to the Board of the School of Church Music.

As part of its mandate the SCM is to maintain and ensure the continued operation of the Diocesan Choir School. The Chair, on advice of the board appoints the Administrative Director of the Choir School. A new Choir School Administrator automatically becomes a member of the Board of the School of Church Music. The appointment is typically for three years.

The Administrative Director of the Choir School is responsible for the 1999 Choir Schoolcomplete operation of the Annual Choir School. With the advice of the Chair of the School of Church Music the Administrative Director is responsible for the appointment of the Musical Directors and the Chaplain for each annual school. All other other staff appointments and department heads and all volunteer positions are also the ultimate responsibility of the Admin. Director. At the actual choir school week the Director is usually refereed to, affectionately, as Chief.
